A leather couch can be the pride of your living room if it is kept in good condition. But, with everything else in our homes, they can become worn over time. However, there are steps that you can take to protect your leather couch and make it last longer.

Regular cleaning

Just because the couch is made of leather doesn’t mean that it doesn’t need to be cleaned. Keeping your leather couch clean is one of the best ways to keep it looking better for longer.

If you have kids who like to eat snacks on the couch, you will need to vacuum it every day. Crumbs and bits of food can get stuck down the sides of the cushions, and if left unchecked, they can become mouldy.

Plus, leaving crumbs about the place can attract pests such as bugs and mice. If you don’t allow eating on the couch, you can vacuum once a week to help check other nasties from damaging your leather couch.

Gently wash

The leather that is used for your couch is an animal hide that has been treated to prevent it from decaying. Because it is from an animal, it needs a gentle wash to stop dirt and grime from building up. There are a few different ways that you can wash your couch but one way that people love is with a bar of face soap.

Any soap that is gentle enough for your face will be gentle enough for your leather. However, if you don’t like the idea of using a facial soap, there are plenty of specialist leather washes that are designed to keep your couch clean and fresh.

Once your couch has been washed and dried, you should apply a leather conditioner. It is important to use a conditioner after you have cleaned the couch as it will help to keep the leather soft. Keeping your leather couch soft is nice but it is necessary to help prevent any tears or splits that might occur if the leather was allowed to become brittle.

However, you don’t need to use it too often. You only need to condition the leather once every six months. You can do it once a year but it shouldn’t be left for longer than 12 months or you run the risk of the leather starting to dry out.

Fixing issues

If there is any damage to your couch, it is not the end of the world. In fact, it can be easy to fix a lot of issues with your couch yourself.

If you have a split in your couch, you can fix it a number of ways. Some people like to make a feature out of a tear by stitching it up and creating a pattern with the stitching. However, if you would prefer to be a bit more subtle with your repair, you can use leather glue to stick the tear back together.

If your leather couch has developed stains, it is possible to repair it with some cupboard ingredients. Using talcum powder or cornstarch, you can remove grease stains from your couch.

All you need to do is sprinkle some powder on to let it absorb the grease. If you can, leave it overnight to get the best results. In the morning, wipe it away and the grease will be lifted away.

Color loss

As your couch gets older, you might notice that there are areas of discoloration. These areas can be fixed with a dose of leather dye. Most of the leather dyes available are easy to use and make a quick job of bringing a couch back to life.

Cat scratches

As much as we love our feline friends, they can do a lot of damage to our furniture. If your cat has scratched your leather, it isn’t the end of the road for your couch. It is possible to repair the damage by trimming the excess threads and filling the damage with leather binder and filler. This can take some work but the end result will be worth it.
